Identity Document Guide

This article helps you capture your Identity Document as part of your Identity Verification task. The article is split into three sections:

1) Walk-through of the task;

2) Examples of good and bad Identity Document photographs;

3) Next steps.

1. Walk-through

When you reach your Identity Check task, you will be asked to capture a picture of your Identity Document. Please note, as per the UK Governments standards, this capture needs to be a picture of your Identity Document, it cannot be a scan or photocopy.

You will be presented with a screen that lists the available documents to you to capture. These available documents are dependent on the reason you have been asked to complete this task, and decided by the business who sent you the check. For the highest chances of successfully verifying your Identity first time, we recommend capturing your passport.

If you do not have any of the documents listed to you, please contact the business who issued you the check, and they will be able to provide alternative methods to verify your Identity.

Once you have selected your Identity Document to capture, you will be presented with guidelines to
align your Identity Document with. Please match these to the best of your ability. If you are capturing a Drivers Licence or National ID Card, you will be asked to capture the front and back of your document.

For the highest chances of successfully verifying your Identity, we recommend:

  • Laying the document flat on a surface
  • Avoid harsh glares/shadows from lighting
  • Make sure the whole Identity Document is in the frame and in focus
  • If you are using your fingers to hold the Identity Document, keep these to the edge of the document, holding as little of the Identity Document as possible.

If we were unable to verify your Identity Document on the first attempt, you will be asked to re-take the photograph, up to two more times.

Please keep reading to view examples of reasons of Identity Document photographs and next steps.

2. Examples

Example 1 - This example shows a good capture of your Identity Document, the full document is in view, there are no obstructions and the camera quality is good with no lighting affect the visability of the document.

Example 2 - This is an example of an Identity Document which we would need to be able to verify. The picture is blurred and therefore none of the writing, security pictures or the face on the image are visible. Please ensure the picture is not blurry, and the quality is as high resolution as possible.

Example 3 - This is an example of an Identity Document which we would struggle to verify as the document is at a harsh angle, meaning the words and security features can become unreadable. Please try keep your Identity Document as straight as possible.

Example 4 - This is an example of an Identity Document we would not be able to verify as the security features, text and image are all covered by glares from the lighting in the room. Please try and position your Identity Document so the light does not produce harsh glares.

Example 5 - This is an example of an Identity Document that has other documents in the background of the image. For best practice, please remove any other documents or items from the background of the image. We recommend placing the Identity Document on a clear table to take the photo.

Example 6 - This is an example of an Identity Document that has shadows over important security features, text and the image. For best practice, please avoid any shadows landing on the document so the whole document is visible and in good lighting.

3. Next Steps

Once you have completed the capture of your Identity Document, you will then be able to move onto your next task which will be one of the below options:

  • If you have captured your Passport, and you are on the Credas App, you will be asked to scan your Passports chip via NFC before moving onto capture your liveness selfie. For more information on this, please click here.
  • If you have not captured your passport, or you are using the web instead of our App, you will be asked to capture your liveness selfie. For more information on this, please click here.
