Capturing your Liveness Selfie

As part of your Identity Check, you will be asked to capture an image of yourself to confirm you are live and present when completing your check. This article walks you through taking a good liveness photograph of yourself with examples.

To get the best results for this liveness check, we recommend following the below tips:

  • Line up your eyes with the horizontal grid line that appears on your screen
  • Line up your face so the vertifical grid line sits at the halfway point of your face
  • Take the picture against a plain background, such as a wall.
  • Treat the liveness selfie as you would when taking a passport photo, no strong facial expressions and no teeth showing

If we cannot verify your liveness on your first attempt, you will be asked to complete an unique action such as putting your finger on your nose, or putting your hand on your head. Please try and match the unique action as closely as possible.

Examples

An example of a good liveness picture is below. The man has lined himself up to the grid frames and his face fills the whole frame. His face is not blurry and there are no shadows or glares disrupting the image.

Below are examples that can cause your liveness verification to fail.

Example 1: This liveness selfie above appears blurry, for best results, hold the phone as still as possible and make sure the photograph is as clear as possible.

Example 2: Whilst this liveness image above aligns with the grid lines, the face is too far away and does not fill the frame. For best results, align the face with the grid lines whilst also filling the screen.

Example 3: This liveness example has not lined up the face with the grid lines, and half of their face is missing. For best result, make sure the full face is in view and lined up with the grid lines.

Example 4: The liveness example above is an example of when lighting of the picture can cause your liveness verification to fail. For best results, make sure there are no glares in the picture.

Example 5: The liveness example above is an example of when lighting of the picture can cause your liveness verification to fail. For best results, make sure there is adequate lighting in the room you are taking your picture in, and there are not too many shadows covering your face.
